A mental disorder or mental illness is a psychological or behavioral pattern associated with distress or disability that occurs in an individual and is not a part of normal development or culture. The recognition and understanding of mental health conditions has changed over time and across cultures, and there are still variations in the definition, assessment, and classification of mental disorders, although standard guideline criteria are widely accepted.

Over a third of people in most countries report meeting criteria for the major categories at some point in their life. The causes are often explained in terms of a diathesis-stress model and biopsychosocial model. Services are based in psychiatric hospitals or in the community, and mental health professionals diagnose individuals by various methods, often relying on observation and questioning in interview.

Psychotherapy and psychiatric medication are two major treatment options as are social interventions, peer support and self-help. In some cases there may be involuntary detention and involuntary treatment where legislation allows. Stigma and discrimination add to the suffering associated with the disorders, and various social movements campaign for change.

mental illness?
Q. Do you all think mental illness is the hardest illness to overcome, and what do you allt hink the primary cause of mental illness is?
Asked by shakeem47 - Sat May 17 07:54:11 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The past is not yet the past. It is the force that has shaped the present and, if you are not careful, it will turn out to be the force that defines your future. You keep referring to some experience which made a big impression on you long ago. You are subtly allowing this to colour your judgement, prejudice your opinion and stunt your imagination. You stand poised to achieve great things. Before you can move forward successfully, though, you must first face (and beat) an old fear. good luck!!!

Can I talk to a pastor about mental illness and Christianity?
Q. I don't want to really explain it here. Does anybody know a way I could talk to a pastor online about this, hopefully someone that is familiar with mental illness. Especially someone who doesn't think that mental illness is due to sin, a lack of faith, or demons. I really need some help working through some stuff.

A. Forget about pastors, go and see a professional and pay for it.

How do you tell the difference from a mental illness and attention seaking?
Q. A family member of mine has a mental illness but their therapist said it was attention seeking and their psychiatrist said it was just behavioral even though she did give her a diagnose. They both seem to have no interest in helping her. How do I know if she really does have a diagnose or if she is just seeking attention?
Asked by Bella - Sun Jan 25 17:19:27 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Certainly there is some underlying diagnosis when people do negative things for attention. My experience has been with a variety of mental health patients, with a variety of disorders. One that has such a sign and symptom is Borderline Personality Disorder but far be it from me to say that is her diagnosis. I don't know.
