From Middle English conterrolle < Old French contrerole < Medieval Latin contrarotulum (“a counter-roll or register used to verify accounts”) < Latin contra (“against, opposite”) + Medieval Latin rotulus, Latin rotula (“roll, a little wheel”), diminutive of rota (“a wheel”).
