Why do many psychologists ignore ancient Cherokee teachings on psychoanalysis?
Q. For many centuries the ancestors have studied the inner workings of the mind. It is not a matter of repression, or Oedipus Complexes, or any other pale-face theory. The mind is a tangled web of inner spirits that seek their own expression. It is time that our ethnocentric psychologists accept this equally valid psychological interpretation.

What can clinical psychologists do that psychiatrists can't do?
Q. For example, I know that psychiatrists can prescribe medicine and psychologists CAN'T, but are there any things that clinical psychologists are specialised in that psychiatrists aren't? If not, then why do we have psychologists and not just psychiatrists? Sorry if it sounds like a stupid question, I'm just a little confused lol.
Asked by Princess - Tue Nov 16 19:23:19 2010 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No not really-They're pretty much the same although pyschiatrists may push the medication a little more. The psychologist can suggest medicine but can't prescribe it. Different people, whether they are a psychologist or psychiatrist, may be more specialized in a specific area, such as depression or such.

Excerpt: Jean Houston, Ph.D. (born 10 May 1937) is an author of New Thought or New Age books. According to her autobiography, A Mythic Life (1996), Jean Houston was born prematurely on May 10, 1937, in New York City. Her mother Mary Todaro Houston, of Sicilian extraction, had studied acting. Her father, Jack Houston (of Scottish descent) was a comedy writer. His forebears and relatives included Sam Houston, Robert E. Lee, William and Mary Randolph of Virginia, and Thomas Jefferson. His career with show business which included developing material for stage, television, and movies kept the family on the move throughout the US; Jean attended some 20 schools by the time she was twelve. As a child, Jean Houston went with a small school group to meet the famous Helen Keller, who left a lasting impression on Houston. When Jean was 14, she literally ran into an old man on Park Avenue in New York City on her way to school. After this mishap, they became friends, and she enjoyed listening to him on various occasions. At the time she learned to pronounce his name as Mr. Thayer. At a much later time, she learned that she had been talking with Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, ( pronounced tay-yar.) Houston earned a BA from Barnard College, a Ph.D. in psychology from the Union Graduate School, and a Ph.D. in religion from the Graduate Theological Foundation. She was deeply influenced by the work of Joseph Campbell, most notably by The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949). The anthropologist Margaret Mead was also a significant mentor, and friend, of Houston's. During her graduate-school years, in New York City in the very early 1960s, Houston had been introduced to the LSD experience by her friend Michael Corner, a medical student. She immediately perceived a rela... More:
