What is the name of the illness kitties can give to pregnant women?
Q. I am wondering if this illness is airborne or tactile. Also, what are the symptoms if you do get it. Also, does it get more complicated for a woman to become pregnant if they have a cat? Or do women not become pregnant because of that illness? Or is it like chicken pox, once you get it, you can't get it anymore?

A. Toxoplasmosis. "The caution pregnant women hear regarding contact with cat litter reflects concern over a disease called toxoplasmosis. More than 60 million people in the United States have been infected with the parasite that causes toxoplasmosis, but very few become ill. However, if you contract the infection for the first time while you are pregnant, it can reach your baby, possibly causing miscarriage, brain damage, or other serious illness. One common source of the infection is cat feces, either in litter boxes or in soil contaminated by infected cats who wander outdoors...Cats pick up the infection from eating raw meat, typically from animals they catch outdoors. You can become infected when you ingest the parasite -- by eating… [cont.]

What are the good things about mental illness?
Q. Everything has a positive and negative side. I am training as a Medical Assistant, and hope to work for a Mental health clinic, or Psychiatrist. Tell me what your diagnosis is(if u want) and the benfits of your illness or disorder.
Asked by Alissa - Wed Dec 31 00:13:37 2008 - - 15 Answers - 0 Comments

A. My diagnosis is Major Depression, Recurrent, Severe without Psychotic Features. My medication gives me dry mouth. I compensate for that by always having a bottle of water nearby. This in turn helps ensure I remain properly hydrated. Remaining properly hydrated (most of us don't) is a good thing. I've become much more tolerant of others who don't seem that "together". From my personal experience, any struggle a person engages in and prevails against, or at least is able to successfully manage, makes that person not only stronger, but a better person. (I'd use the maxim here: "That which does not kill us makes us stronger.", except that may not a good thing to tell someone who is severely depressed and suicidal...) That pretty much sums it… [cont.]

What is the difference between a terminally illness and a chronic illness?
Q. I would like to know what is the difference between a chronic illness and a terminally illness because my wife has a chronic disease called diabetes.
Asked by D - Thu Oct 19 08:03:53 2006 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Terminal means it will kill you. Chronic means it is life-threatening. I have diabetes, too, and it can be severe, but there is a treatment. Cancer is sometimes a terminal illness. I hope this helped. :)

If you have a terminal illness should you be able to kill youself?
Q. Say you have a terminal Illness that you know will cause you pain and anguish should you have the right to kill yourself, (but only if you have a terminal illness.) Do others have the right to tell you that you can't? Are they allowed to tell you how to run your life?
Asked by sweetchik2211 - Mon Jun 5 23:38:08 2006 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I think we should all have the right to end our lives if we are terminal and the rest of our days would only be filled with pain and suffering. We are allowed to end a animals life if it is suffering but not a human life. I personally think this is totally rediculous but of course this is against the law. If more people would stand up and fight for our rights it may happen one day. If done in a medical/hospice controlled setting then I don't see anything wrong with it as long as the terminal patient has agreed to it and they are of sound mind.

how do you deal with an undiagnosed mental illness in family?
Q. What can someone do to deal with a 62 year old family member whom is obviously suffering from an mental illness, but refuses to get help, or acknowledge it? He self medicates with alcohol and prescription drugs. He alienates/can't get along with others, his only friend is the TV, has drastic mood swings and disorganized/illogical thinking. Is there a professional out there that can give me some tips? Thank you for your really great answers. Unfortunately the doctor he does see is a pill pusher. How do you think he gets those prescription meds. He won't go to another dr. because he likes getting the drugs and the brush off!!

A. Sometimes those in our families need help and they blame everyone else around them instead of looking at themselves. These people make others need to go for therapy because they refuse to look in the mirror. If you cannot get them to seek the help they are in need of, go talk to someone so that you can learn the best way to cope with them. These people drain the energy out of those closest to them. Get the help you need so you can deal with this situation. Best Wishes

A. mental illness of such a severe nature that a person cannot distinguish fantasy from reality, cannot conduct her/his affairs due to psychosis, or is subject to uncontrollable impulsive behavior. Insanity is distinguished from low intelligence or mental deficiency due to age or injury. If a complaint is made to law enforcement, to the district attorney, or to medical personnel that a person is evidencing psychotic behavior, he/she may be confined to a medical facility long enough (typically 72 hours) to be examined by psychiatrists who submit written reports to the local superior/county/district court. A hearing is then held before a judge, with the person in question entitled to legal representation, to determine if she/he should be placed… [cont.]

What criteria is being used to reference great minds of history to mental illness?
Q. Are we basing this on historical documentation of their erratic behavior? I have often heard Van Gogh, and Poe referred to as manic depressive/schizophrenic/ ect. Albert Einstein as autistic/schizophrenic among numerous other dead greats now being diagnosed. Did we establish these assumptions to bring consolation to those suffering from mental illness, or in our pretentious faith in modern science decide to "label" any popular figure who's behavior did not conform to the standards of their time, and apply it to ours? I'm just curious and a little confused as the criteria for mental illness and specific diagnoses continues to "evolve" daily and remains subjective and inconsistent. Supposedly a "definititive diagnoses"can not be made… [cont.]

A. These labels placed on historical figures are completely unsubstantiated and have no true value. If you look at the current manual used for diagnosis under the auspises of the APA (American Psychological Association) the DSM IV-TR there is a statement which says that the labels or diaqnoses noted in the manual are purely a form of short hand for mental health professionals and may descibe a group of behaviors which are consistent with a person with a mental disorder. It further states that the diagnosis can only be made after counseling and evaluation by the mental health provider. As no mental health provider can observe, speak with or in anyway directly evaluate any person who is deceased, any opinion of their behavior has no value,… [cont.]

Asked by We're all mortal - Mon Jun 22 05:14:51 2009 - - 15 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There's short term depression, and then there's clinical depression. Clinical depression is mainly categorized by not really having anything in your life that would cause you to feel so depressed. Situational/short term depression is categorized by the depression being triggered by a certain event in your life.

How do you tell the difference from a mental illness and attention seaking?
Q. A family member of mine has a mental illness but their therapist said it was attention seeking and their psychiatrist said it was just behavioral even though she did give her a diagnose. They both seem to have no interest in helping her. How do I know if she really does have a diagnose or if she is just seeking attention?

A. Certainly there is some underlying diagnosis when people do negative things for attention. My experience has been with a variety of mental health patients, with a variety of disorders. One that has such a sign and symptom is Borderline Personality Disorder but far be it from me to say that is her diagnosis. I don't know.

I am so glad that you are getting a new medication in March, I hope that will help you. But remember there are the special therapies that teach you the skills you weren't able to learn in childhood.

How does illness help us to use our capital of life?
Q. The fact that those who come to this world continuously depart, and the young grow old, and man perpetually revolves amid death and separation testifies that he did not come to this world to enjoy himself and receive pleasure. Moreover, while man is the most perfect, the most elevated, of living beings and the best endowed in regard to members and faculties, through thinking of past pleasures and future pains, he passes only a grievous, troublesome life, lower than the animals. This means that man did not come to this world in order to live in fine manner and pass his life in ease and pleasure. Rather, possessing vast capital, he came here to work and do trade for an eternal, everlasting life. The capital given to man is his lifetime.… [cont.]

A. People get a lot of spiritual support when they are ill through prayer. However pain and illness can wear out the spirit and as we are mere mortals, no one wants to be ill. People need good medical care and access to treatment and medicine. People who are ill need support both physically and mentally. I think your life will be a lot more comfortable if you are ill and wealthy, than if you are ill and poor. It is very hard to be cheerful when you are ill. So it is nice to surround yourself with a few creature comforts, and necessities, that can make you happy and comfortable.

Can homelessness cause mental illness or is mental illness heightened by homelessness?
Q. I am aware that many people who are mentally ill are homeless. However weren't they already mentally ill, prior to becoming homeless? My main question is, if a person is medically proven to not have a mental illness or depression becomes homeless, does the traumatic effects of being homeless make said person mentally ill? If so, with help can such a person become socially normal, or are the mental changes permament?
Asked by DesiDani - Fri Nov 16 21:51:19 2007 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If I have caught your meaning correctly, my response is that both of these feed each other. The mentally ill person -- with poor judgement and living outside of reality makes a series of bad decisions. The series of bad decisions (mental illness) uninterrupted results in losing a place to live or homelessness. The homeless situation lacks in stable healthy surroundings that would promote or sustain health -- and the mental health of the individual is further disrupted and endangered. The further the mental health of an individual spirals down, by living in high stress conditions, the greater his dysfunction grows, and the less able he is to get himself out of the homeless situation. Like I said, one condition feeds the other. This… [cont.]

I can't highlight your homework for you, but I can explain to you my experience. I have an anxiety disorder, mild OCD and PTSD, Depersonalization, and Schizophrenia. It's also possible that I have BiPolar, which would turn the Schizophrenia into Schizoaffective disorder. The Schizophrenia, being the worst, obviously affects me the most. So much of what I do is affected by it, and at it's worst, you feel as if you are in a living hell. Anxiety is right up there next to it, because I have a pretty severe case (the anxiety brought upon the Depersonalization and OCD). A. It sounds like it might be the flu, since you've got sore muscles and migraines and you're tired. It could also be a really bad cold... the symptoms you have are pretty non-specific--they're common to a lot of illnesses. If it's been going on for more than a couple days, go see a doctor, just to make sure it isn't something serious. Until then, get lots of rest and don't stress yourself, because it'll take longer to recover if you're not saving energy.

How is the difference between normal sexual behaviour and illness defined?
Q. Someone over n Religion & Spirituality brough up a film shown at Cannes about bestiality. They were trying to blame "Godlessness," but I argued that these people were mentally ill and needed doctors rather than demonization. Now, I know homosexuality is not an illness, but I know this will come up over there and I truly don't know, psychologically, how they differ. Obviously attraction to another human being cannot be compared with attraction to an animal and obviously this animal thing is about sex rather than a relationship, but how does psychology differentiate between what is healthy but unusual from what is just plain sick? Sorry if this is a stupid question. Thanks!

A. For the most part, it is considered to be an "illness" when "the behavior, sexual urges, or fantasies cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning." (DSM-IV-TR). An illness can also be diagnosed when the sexual fantasies involve 1)nonhuman objects, 2)the suffering or humiliation of oneself or one's partner (harm to self or others), or 3) children or nonconsenting persons (or nonconsenting animals, I assume). However, most psychologists will define a mental illness when a behavior starts to interfere with functioning. Like if a guy is so preoccupied with sex with animals, that is all he can think about. He can't concentrate at work. His wife has left him. He has… [cont.]

What illness in a cat has blood around the nose?
Q. I trapped a cat last night because I am trying to get some help for the strays around here. He had blood on his nose. I didn't know if it was an illness or maybe just from trying to get out of the trap. Any thoughts? These are strays I'm catching. Unfortunately, I can't take them to the vet. I'll be taking it to the ascap to get tested and neutered, then re-released. I was just wondering if it sounded like any type of illness.
Asked by tazzmainiandevils - Fri May 15 10:37:24 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Many trapped cats have blood on their noses - they are trying to get out of the trap, and actually rub their noses/faces raw. If it's not that, then it's probably a calici virus, as that can cause bloody lesions in the throat, mouth, and nose.
