Is homosexuality a mental illness?
Q. Consider: It used to be on the list of mental illnesses for many years until the 1970's. During the 70's, the radical homosexual extremists stormed the American Psychiatric Association's conventions on consecutive years, using guerilla theater tactics and instigating straightforward shouting matches. This was done in order to badger the psychiatrists into taking homosexuality off of the mental illness list, and those radicals were obviously successful in their efforts. I can only assume that the psychiatrists didn't want to tangle with them and caved in, because they were probably a bunch of bow-tie wearing pacifists. However, many of those who relented continued to treat homosexuality as a disease in their private practices, away from… [cont.]

Why are there so many human diseases? Is there a purpose for these diseases to exist?
Q. am studying pharmacy and I am amazed at how many human diseases exist (e.g heart disease, cancer [over 200 types], diabetes, epilepsy, arthritis, infections [there are so many], genetic diseases, mental illnesses [the list of mental illnesses is huge], autoimmune diseases (it is weird that your defence systems ends up attacking its the thing it was designed to protect) and many many more. I am wondering to myself why is the human body so fragile? Is there a purpose to all these diseases?
Asked by Rainbowstar - Mon Jul 27 22:23:13 2009 - Biology - 4 Answers - Comments

A. Diseases are one of the many regulating factors that control the population. There's a certain carrying capacity, the amount of people that can live while still having a enough resources in the world to thrive. To ensure that the population stays in check, diseases, as well as natural disasters, [unfortunately] lower the population to make sure that the human species can go on, and still have resources.

I need help developing a character in my story?
Q. I need some developing on character in my story, but I don't want to give them a cliche psychosis, Can anyone give me list of mental illnesses, that are like schizophrenia? Any really manic type psychosis?
Asked by Tiffany M - Wed Sep 24 23:51:24 2008 - Books & Authors - 2 Answers - Comments

A. An interesting character doesn't have to be mentally ill. If you want manic, you could give the character a zealous focus on a particular thing, brought about by a particular thing earlier in life. For example, someone who wears a much too childlike hairstyle late in life because she was praised for that hairstyle when she was five, or someone who is zealously into building models, or solving math problems or cleaning things because they did well at it and received praise for it from someone they admired. Such a human quirk can add interest to a character easily, it's understandable and not "clinical."

A. At the turn of the 20th century, hysteria and psychosis (or insanity) were major ones although they were really other illnesses that were falsely identified. Most female mental patients were diagnosed with hysteria. Hysteria was a catch-all. Many mental patients were women who had physical problems more than mental ones. Some were simply having menopause or excessive discharges. See if you can find some Insane Asylum archives. Records of patients are very brief, but they do still have them in most cases. Real mental illnesses were the same as the ones we have how, but they usually were given different names.Neurosis was also a general term for many of the patients. We still use it today, but it was used a little different then and was not… [cont.]

Q. I have to do a project where I list the characters from the novel "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and then list the mental illness/disorder that they suffer from. For example: "Rub-a-Dub" George Sorensen: Germaphobia (AKA mysophobia) I need the actual illness/disorder names. I know a lot about the characters, I just need the techinal names. I know that... Billy Bibbit: stutters a lot, cuts himself, his mother controls him even though he's in his thirties Scanlon: has an obsession for explosives and destruction Martini: has many hallucinations Harding: tries to repress his homosexuality Can you guys think of the actual names for these illnesses/disorders?
Asked by Matt A - Tue Nov 9 21:01:09 2010 - Books & Authors - 1 Answers - Comments

A. I played Martini onstage and had to research him, he has schizophrenia. Harding was just neurotic, not really ill at all. Scanlon was a dissociative personality disorder. I don't' remember exactly but Billy was mostly smothered by his mom and not really ill either.

I went to the Social security office today and when they called my number, he asked me a few questions. He asked when I stopped working and then he asked if I was disabled then. At first I said No, but then I quickly said yes. Do you think he put down yes for an answer or no? I keep asking myself that question. The list of mental illnesses I have are: Bipolar Disorder, OCD, PTSD, anxiety, depression, I am going crazy worrying if he put yes or no. Q. I posted a question earlier today asking why gays are viewed as evil as a means to gain a public opinion for a project and was surprised to see a this response. A participant provided these statistics (I am using this term loosely because the participant failed to cite her source) about the gay community to argue why gays should be condemned. please view the claims listed below and explain if you do or don t believe these claims about the gay community to be true. why or why not? Were these facts or similar ones shared in your Church? A. I always laugh when heterosexuals think they are some kind of standard or reigning kings and queens when it comes to lifestyle when they have just as many problems if not more than the gay community does. It's hets that produce Jeffrey Dahmers and Charles Mansons. Their high divorce rate, cheating, high rape and incest statistics , spousal abuse certainly leave a lot to be desired when it comes to standards society should follow. They're full of it. That website is a biased farce and not true at all

What mental health disorders/illnesses are hereditary?
Q. I've been looking forever on Google and can't find a straight-up answer to this question! I just need a list of hereditary mental disorders that have come from a legit website or source (please include). thank you!
Asked by hiya - Tue Jul 27 13:14:34 2010 - Mental Health - 1 Answers - Comments

A. There isn't really a straight up answer... There is no proof that any of them are.. but there is very strong evidence that many are... it is also common to have families where there seems to be a tendancy to develop mental disorders but they all have different ones... Schizophrenia and Bipolar are definitely genetic... Anxiety Disorders (Panic/OCD, etc...) seem to run in families. Addiction also seems to have a genetic component... some people just have a genetic lack of resistance to addiction, especially alcoholism. Now it seems that there may be a genetic predisposition to developing personality disorders.. which would explain why given the same upbringing some people end up ill and others end up fine... No mental disorder is guaranteed… [cont.]

What If you were hiring for a position and one of the potential hires had listed a mental illness?
Q. Additionally; Both candidates have identical skills, interviewed on the same day, and no other skill either mentioned or obvious could tell one from the other, who would you choose? A. I definitely wouldn't take the illness into consideration especially if the skills and experience are the same between the two candidates. Make sure the candidate can perform the job duties without interference from the illness. Last year I hired someone who had been diagnosed bipolar but was on medication. Apparently he stopped taking his medication because he was constantly sleeping on the job, late, etc. I had to be very careful and consult HR quite a bit but eventually we let him go because he was not able to perform the duties outlines in his job description. The Americans with Disabilities Act requires you to make some concessions so that the person with the mental illness has the same opportunity as anyone else, but the job still… [cont.]
