Tax implications of offering commissions to users that generate leads for my website?
Q. I run a site and I wanted to know if I offer commissions to users of the site that referrer other people to subscribe to my site and I offer commissions to the people that brought in the new users, what are the tax implications? Do I need to create 1099s for everyone that I paid during the year or some other type of tax form?
Asked by Paul M - Wed Nov 19 18:52:38 2008 - United States - 4 Answers - Comments
A. You need to get W-9s from each payee. If they are a US citizen and give you their SSN, you don't need to file the 1099-Misc unless the payment is $600 or more (they still have to report the income). If they don't give you a valid SSN, you have to withhold 28% and send that to the government--and as soon as you withhold even $1, you have to issue the 1099-Misc. If you think they aren't giving you an SSN because they aren't US citizens, then the form is the W-8Ben, the withholding rate is 30% and you issue a 1042-S at the end fo the year.

Is it possible to hide/cloak an affiliate ID link without owning a website?
Q. url shortners like tinyurl and bit.ly only shortens the url but it doesn't hide the referrer once you click the shortened link. Is it possible to hide/cloak an affiliate ID link without owning a website? Most cloaking softwares and methods only work if you have a website or blog. Unfortunately I don't have one. I use article marketing.

How do take a subject in a photo, and turn it black in Photo Shop CS2?
Q. What I want to do is, open a picture on Photo Shop CS2, find a subject I want and turn it all black. This is a great example of what I want to do, take a look at this picture. The URL link is long, but please take a look because that is what I want to do with my picture.

A. I have never used CS2, but yes to CS3-5. at least from 3 and up, there is a tool called Magic Wand - I imagine its in CS2 - shortcut key W, and when you click with it, it will select everything of similar color, almost like MS Paint paint bucket only better. If it did not select everything, then at the top click the button with the plus sign in the corner, to add to it. I think there is a way to change the tolerance (higher, the more different colors it will select), but I only know that there IS a tool in CS5 that has it right in the interface. When you have the full thing selected, use the paint bucket, gradient, brush, or whatever else you want to color in the object.

A. We had an interior design business in LA for 30 years and offered a similar service. Some of our clients simply couldn't afford $30,000 to $50,000 for a total room design, so we offered a service where we devised a plan based on their lifestyle, needs and desires. We rendered drawings with sample color themes, fabric choices, wood tones, window and floor treatments that they could bring with them as they purchased items. Actually, most of the work we did for our clients was in a sense serving as a liason between the trades and the clients. All of our installers, upholsters, painters, electricians, plumbers, etc. had their own businesses and contracted with us independently to complete our designs. On occasion, we had a general contractor,… [cont.]

Does Bank of America offer incentives to their employees for referring new employees?
Q. For instance, when Washington Mutual was around, they offered a cash incentive to their employees when they successfully referred a new recruit to the company. A. Yes, they have an employee referral program (for recruiting new employees.) You can find out more details by contacting HR. The program is called "Conect" (sic), and a presentation for it is available here Bounties usually depend upon how hard the position is to fill, how long they stay, and business conditions.

A. I am not sure when affiliate marketing became illegal at all. This is what you are looking for. It is totally legal to pay referrers to send people to your site and/or to sell your product. Basically, it is the same as paying someone for commissioned sales of a product so I can't see how that is considered illegal in any case if you pay what you promise. Good luck to you! Bonnie Ramsey

I changed it back to 2 but some pages still don't load correctly. I rebooted and I'm using Firefox. What else can I do to fix the way web pages are displayed? I want it back to the default look.

Q. I wanted to access a website but it said to disable referrers go to about:config and input "sendrefer" then change the 2 to 1. I did this and the site worked but other pages the formatting looked messed up e.g., tables were gone and the page format was long and with errors. I changed it back to 2 but some pages still don't load correctly. I rebooted and I'm using Firefox. What else can I do to fix the way web pages are displayed? I want it back to the default look.
